About Us - Western Australian Plant Wholesaler

Domus Nursery specialises in growing a range of exotic and native plants that thrive in Western Australia's harsh climate. Each season we introduce exciting new plant selections to enhance our range.

Domus grows about 800 different exotic and native plants which are propagated in-house using seed and cuttings with stock also sourced from quality propagators around Australia. Plants are supplied direct to landscapers and government bodies and sold to the public throughout WA in garden centres and hardware stores. These include Zanthorrea Nursery, Dawsons Gardenworld, Waldecks Garden Centres and other independent garden centres. Hardware stores such as Bunnings Warehouse, Mitre 10 and Home Hardware also sell many of our lines. To search for your nearest retail outlet click here.

Accreditation:

Domus is accredited under the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) which is a series of 'best practice' guidelines. Domus is also Eco-Hort certified, which assesses and manages the environmental risks of the business.

Operations:

Domus has grown since it's early days in 1973 to have over 4.5ha of growing area and employ more than 30 staff. Being within water catchment area we recycle all surface water throughout the growing season utilising sand filtration and chlorination to prevent the spread of pathogens. Bores are used as the primary source of water to supplement this.

History:

Domus means 'of the home', and was chosen as the business name when horticulturalist Brian Groom started the nursery in 1973 on an old orchard site. Brian started as a horticultural apprentice at Regents Park in London and completed his Diploma in Horticulture at the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens at Wisley. When he first came to Australia he worked in the nursery at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens then spent some time at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney before deciding starting Domus Nursery. At the start the nursery, which now covers over 4.5ha, mostly grew potted native plants, along with Protea and Leucadendron for the cut flower market. As the retail market changed Domus expanded into exotic plants.

In 1975 Brian married Robin and their son Colin was born the following year. As a boy Colin helped out at the nursery and his favourite job was spending time with his Dad keeping the machines and reticulation running. After completing a BCom at UWA and working as a graduate auditor, Colin joined Domus full-time in 1998.
